"We can do it!," said the Women
The new Christian Church building at St Francisville was under construction in September 1974 but had come a long way since the first block was laid months before.
Construction reached a point where much work needed to be done on the inside and church members pitched in to help. Mrs. LaVerday Keneipp and Dorothy Fox performed the finishing work such as sanding, staining, filling nail holes and rubbing steel wool on the exposed beams to get the desired effect. Mrs. Helen Lane, Mrs. Virginia Pavitt, Mrs. Mary Beard, Mrs. Mary Chaplin, Mrs. Carolyn Blair and Mrs. Yvonne Highsmith, and some men, William Fox, Sam Brian and Dick Lewis also helped. Three boys, Bill and Mark Pavitt and Tim York, filled in nail holes and held the lights for Fox who did much of his work at night.
Besides the work on the beams approximately 1340 feet of trim was completed. Church members spent 267 hours working on the beams, trim, and 10 doors. Completion was set for later in the Fall of 1974. The previous building occupied by the church was destroyed by fire.
