Stone Pillars Mystery

The stone pillars shown below were likely placed to mark the original property boundaries of the Dowell Greenhouse property on Lexington Street in Lawrenceville.
Additional pillars can be found on Route 1, just south of the Crawford County line on the west side of the highway. Mr. Dowell built a cabin north of town for his wife, with large glass windows to view the landscape. Though young boys burned the cabin down, the stone pillars still stand to mark the entrance to the property.
The stone house behind the Lawrenceville post office seems similar in construction to the pillars, but a local contractor notes it is made of ‘geodes’, unlike the Dowell pillars.
Questions remain about whether more of these pillars (or stone houses) exist in the county and who the stone mason responsible for their creation was. If you can assist us with any information please email lawrencelore@gmail.com.
