Dr Hugh Mayr's Wall Sign

Dr. Hugh Mayr, local dentist, located at 612 1/2 12th St Lawrenceville, displayed this list on his wall for several years.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE IN A SMALL TOWN WHEN:

When Third Street is the edge of town.

When you write a check on the wrong bank and it covers for you.

When you miss a Sunday at church and receive a get well card.

When a 55 year old farmer is referred to as Young Johnson.

When someone asked how you feel and listens to what you have to say.

When you drive into a ditch five miles out of town and word gets back before you do.

When you can’t walk for exercise, because every car that passes you, offers you a ride.

When you dial a wrong number and talk for 15 minutes anyway.

When you speak to each dog you pass by name and he wags his tail at you.

When everyone’s cap has a seed emblem on it.

When you don’t use your turn signals because everyone knows where you are going.

When the pickups on main street outnumber the cars.

When the bank will figure your income tax if you help him sort through the shoe box.

Dr Hugh Mayr graduated from Northwestern University School of Dentistry in 1943. During WWII he was a Captain in the US Army at Fort Sills, Oklahoma, and spent 18 months overseas in the Philippines and Japan.  After returning to civilian life and five years of private practice in Evanston, Dr Mayr came to Lawrenceville in 1951 and formed a dental practice partnership with Dr Louis Schroeder. Following the death of his partner, Dr Mayr purchased the McNeil building at the corner of 12th and Walnut streets and remodeled it as his permanent dental office.Dr Hugh Mayr died March 12, 2010, at age 88 at the United Methodist Home.

Dr. Mayr was a wonderful dentist, person and friend to my family. I always admired and respected him. He was an amazing asset to our community. Plus, as you can tell, he had a great sense of humor.
